Psychological and Psycho-Educational Assessments

Standard psychological and psycho-educational assessments are very useful as they use standardised test batteries and provide important information related to intelligence, achievement, behaviour and learning. These assessments can be very brief or lengthy, depending on the nature of the referral. The selection of tests and interpretation depends entirely on the skill and expertise of the examiner but psychologists are required to adhere to the standards of practise identified by the College of Alberta Psychologists. Psycho-educational assessments are useful for individuals suspected of:

Learning Disability
Mental Handicap or Deficiency
Behaviour Problems
Giftedness
School Readiness
Important Screening tests for other more complex problems

Depending on the skill of the examiner, these assessments typically focus on the following variables:

1. Eye-hand coordination
2. Intellectual functioning & problem solving
3. Academic achievement functions/readiness
4. Emotional/social/behavioural functioning may be included
5. Individualised remediation/rehabilitation plans/specific recommendations
6. Diagnosis & prognosis may be included but often is not
7. Suggestions for follow-up/referral to other professionals
8. Case conference and professional report
